Long-time board member steps down from MHBA
Sep 20, 2010
Posted In: General
Ed Smith, of Nelson and Small, in Portland, has been involved with the modular industry for about 30 years. He was part of the Board of Directors for the last six years, and also served as a member and master sponsor.
Ena Derenburger, of Turn Key Homes in Oxford, is vice-president of the MHBA. She said there are few members who deserve recognition more than Smith.
“Ed was of infinite value to our board. He always found time to attend general membership meetings, offer committee support, and was eager to share any knowledge that could help your business thrive,” Derenburger said.
Rich Cromwell, a member of the MHBA, said that Smith was always a friend to the organization, and the first person to jump in and get the job done during events.
“I don't remember the MHBA without Ed. He's like comfort food,” Cromwell said. “He was there for builders in financial trouble, too. When you do that you put yourself on the line.”
But for all his accolades, Smith felt that membership to the MHBA was of great value to him. He found the amount of information available and networking opportunities helpful, but also appreciated the professional status that comes with joining the MHBA.
“Being a member of the MHBA shows your client that not only are you serious about this business, but you have taken an oath of integrity on how you do your business and that you're a professional,” Smith said.
He also said that being a member makes it easier to follow trends in the building industry, as you know in advance about upcoming issues and aren't usually surprised by regulation or legalese.
“We wish Ed much success as he turns to the next page, but he is irreplaceable and will be missed,” Derenburger added.
